Thesis (M.Arch.)--University of Waterloo (Canada), 2007.
In our ever changing world we must constantly look to new ways and new means. Waiting until a change is necessary for our survival is dangerous and costly. Our environment and our communities do not need to be thought of as independent entities. They can work in symbiotic relationships that are mutually beneficial. Sometimes the best solution is the simplest. Urban Agriculture is an ancient practice that once ensured the survival of the practitioner and the community. Like most tried and true methods, urban agriculture, makes obvious sense in our changing world. In response to the needs of the community and juxtaposed against ridiculous development urban agriculture practiced in dense, highly populated places can help to redefine and strengthen communities, people and place. It can encourage health both mental and physical, it can establish food security, it can generate economic strength and it can create self sufficient communities.

Urban agriculture is possible and requires less work than most would think. Local growing makes sense and has proven to be a smart choice for both producers and consumers. Urban agriculture is a new trend in North American societies that should be pursued and encouraged.
