This library thesis project explores strange attractors. This includes defining what a strange attractor is, understanding characteristics of attractors such as correlation dimension and Lyapunov exponents, and how to extract a strange attractor from a many variable physical system. In order to gain an understanding of strange attractors, aspects of nonlinear dynamics are first examined. These aspects include fixed points, limit cycles, and bifurcations. The concept of dimension is then explored and it is shown how objects can have non-integer dimension. Common properties of chaotic systems are then introduced through the examination of the double pendulum. Finally, strange attractors are studied. These include the Lorenz Attractor, the Rossler Attractor and a strange attractor produced by an electronic circuit. These attractors are analyzed using computer programs written in Microsoft Visual C++. Actual data taken from the electronic circuit is also analyzed through a method known as attractor reconstruction.
