This study sought to investigate humor style in young children and how humor style is related to general emotional and social well-being. Specifically, three humor styles in young children were examined along with possible connections between these humor styles and children's aggression, internalizing, and social status including peer rejection. Additionally, the differential use of each humor style based on participant gender was examined. A final goal of this study was to develop a new measure of humor for young children and to determine the reliability and validity of this measure.

Specifically this study proposed the following major hypotheses: (a) higher scores on aggressive humor would be related to higher levels of aggressive behavior and social problems, (b) humor style would be related to social preference, (c) higher scores on self-enhancing humor would be related to lower levels of internalizing behavior, (d) humor style would moderate the relationship between aggression and rejection, and (e) gender differences would exist in the use of different humor styles. In order to investigate these hypotheses, data were collected from 155 first-grade children from two school districts. Four elementary schools and 11 classrooms participated in this study. The study participants were fairly evenly distributed between boys and girls (73 boys and 82 girls).

In general, evidence was found for the presence of the three humor styles in young children. Little support was found for humor as a buffering factor for depression and rejection in young children. Connections between an aggressive humor style, aggressive behavior, and social problems were found in the present research, whereas other humor styles were not related to aggression or social problems. Gender differences in humor styles were demonstrated in the current study as well. Finally, support for the Children's Humor Styles Questionnaire was displayed through an investigation of the reliability and validity of the measure.
