The purpose of this study was to (a) explore the relationship between stress and symptoms in adolescents with schizophrenia, particularly, whether individual symptoms differ systematically in relation to levels of stress over time, (b) to examined the discrepancy between parents' and adolescents' ratings of the adolescents level of stress and symptoms, and (c) to investigate whether adolescent functioning differs systematically in relation to family functioning over time.

520 $a This study is a secondary analysis of an existing data set. A total of 40 adolescents with schizophrenia and their family were drawn from the study of self-management therapy for youth with schizophrenia. The original study was a randomized, two-group, experimental design with four repeated measures. Information from parents and adolescents with schizophrenia were used for analysis. Exploratory analysis, General estimating equation (GEE), and multilevel modeling with SAS PROC MIXED, full maximum likelihood method were used.
520 $a Of the 40 adolescents with schizophrenia, 32 (80%) were males, and 8 (20%) were females. The mean age was 17.25 years (SD=1.37) at the first entry, and 22 (55%) were Caucasian. Of the 40 parents of adolescents with schizophrenia, 34 respondents were female (85%). The mean age was 46.08 years (SD=4.60), and 23 (57.5%) were Caucasian.
520 $a The early signs and symptoms in adolescents with schizophrenia decreased over time, but it was not statistically significant. Daily hassles significantly predicted early signs and symptoms in adolescents over time after controlling time, baseline early sign of symptoms, and the length of illness. Adolescents reported more hassles and less early sign and symptoms compared to those of parents. Adolescents' level of functioning statistically decreased over time. In particular, family functioning was strongly associated with adolescents functioning impairment after controlling time, baseline adolescents functioning, symptoms in adolescents with schizophrenia.
520 $a This study provided unique information regarding the change in symptoms and in level of functioning, the relationship between symptoms and stress, and the role of family functioning in adolescents with schizophrenia and their family. Finding supported the positive influence of family interventions on adolescents functioning and family functioning and provided the information to refine family intervention programs.
