This report examines both developmental/socialization theories and behavior genetic theories of the development of religiousness. Developmental researchers support the idea that religiousness is learned and transmitted through environmental mechanisms. Previous behavior genetic research has shown, however, that differences in religiousness are also partly due to genetic differences among people. These studies further investigated genetic and environmental influences on religiousness in order to try to better understand its etiology. The first and second studies focused on the environmental transmission of religiousness from parent to child during adolescence. In the first study, an adoption design was used to test the hypothesis that in childhood/adolescence, shared environmental factors contribute to religiousness. It was hypothesized that little genetic influence but large shared environmental influences would be present, as has been found in other studies. This was indeed the case. The second study aimed to identify specific environmental factors within adoptive families that account for the shared environmental effects on religiousness. Parenting and parent variables; such as the parent-child relationship, the marital relationship, and parental personality; were investigated as possible moderators of parent-child transmission of religiousness. Only two of the family variables were significant: the Opinions on Child Rearing measure was a mediator of transmission and the Parental Environment Questionnaire was a moderator of transmission. These two effects accounted for very small portions of variance, though they did hold up in adoptive families, allowing the conclusion that the effects were purely environmental. The final study investigated the genetic influence on religiousness seen in previous research with adult samples. The study focused on the relationship between religiousness and personality traits. Personality traits have been shown to be heritable, and the proposed study tested the hypothesis that religiousness is heritable, in part, because it is related to personality. Analyses supported this conclusion, showing that religiousness was most related to the personality variable of Traditionalism. Though these studies help in understanding the development of religiousness across time, more work needs to be done to further investigate both developmental and behavior genetic theories of development.
