520 $a The project seeks to teach people how it is possible to develop a meditative, contemplative approach to life. In doing this, various biblical, historical, and traditional texts and stories were used, to demonstrate that meditation, contemplation, and mysticism have a significant place in the history of the Christian faith. Because of my background in the United Methodist Church, I chose to examine John and Charles Wesley's experiences with meditation, contemplation, and mysticism, and how these spiritual disciplines continue to shape the hymnody and worship liturgy of the Church today. Also, I chose to look at the impact of St. John of the Cross, one of the great mystical writers from the sixteenth century, on contemporary Christian life and thinking.
520 $a The primary context was a spiritual retreat that I developed for parishioners in the Colchester and Tennessee United Methodist Churches, the congregations of which I serve a pastor. There, I introduced a variety of exercises and practices to teach people some elements of meditation, contemplation, and mysticism, and to help them see how we can learn to implement these spiritual disciplines into our everyday living.
