Declines in cognitive abilities and difficulties with complex cognitive tasks in elders have been well documented. Research on cognitive declines, however, tends to focus on impaired memory, and seldom considers the cognitive processes involved in learning. Further, studies of minority and underserved elder populations are rare. The purpose of the present study was to contribute to the research literature on cognitive processes by examining the relationship between anxiety and cognitive task performance in Hispanic elders. This study was developed as part of a larger five-year longitudinal study funded jointly by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) (Grant No. MH 63709), entitled The Built Environment and Hispanic Elders' Behavioral Health.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The current investigation hypothesized that working memory capacity would mediate the relationship between anxiety and encoding processes; that is, as an individual's level of anxiety increases, working memory capacity would subsequently decrease, ultimately leading to impaired encoding of information. A total of 273 Hispanic elders participated in this study and completed a battery of assessments including a modified Spanish version of the State Trait Anxiety Inventory and a Spanish translation of the California Verbal Learning Test - Second Edition. Data was analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling.

Results indicated that the proposed model failed to support mediation. Although anxiety and working memory were negatively related to encoding processes, as hypothesized, anxiety had no significant impact on working memory for the sample analyzed. Findings were considered in light of the failed structural model, and reasons why mediation was not evident were explored. Practical applications of findings and limitations were discussed. Future areas of research were suggested.
