Fifty women completed online surveys at three points of treatment---before the IVF cycle began (T1 - Baseline), one week into the cycle (T2 - Stimulation/Follicular), and one week after embryo transfer (T3 - Anticipation/Luteal). Participants completed The Mood and Anxiety Symptom Questionnaire Short Form (MASQ, the brief COPE questionnaire and a measure of Perceived Control Over Infertility (PCOI) at all times. Personality was measured by the Schedule for Nonadaptive and Adaptive Personality (SNAP) and the Intolerance of Uncertainty Scale (IUS). A measure of superstitions was completed at T2 and T3.

The results demonstrated that perceived controllability varied throughout the cycle, such that participants felt that they had less control over the outcome of the cycle during T3 (repeated measures MANOVA (F (1, 46) = 6.17, p < .05), and that participants were significantly more depressed during T3 (repeated measures MANOVA, F (1, 45) = 4.52, p < .05). An interaction between stage of treatment and coping strategy was established. Participants used more problem-focused coping during T2, and less problem-focused coping during T3 (repeated measures MANOVA, F (1, 44) = 4.3 8, p < .05). Additionally, those who increased the use of problem-focused coping at T3 were more anxious (r (49) = -.35, p < .01). Participants with lower tolerance for uncertainty were significantly more distressed than those with higher tolerance of uncertainty ( r (49) = .33, p < .01). Finally, superstitious behaviors were employed more frequently at T3 (repeated measures MANOVA F (1, 38) = 5.74, p <.05) and were positively correlated with anxiety at T3 (r (49) = .36, p < .001).

Findings suggest that coping with IVF is an active process of coping that requires adjusting efforts as the cycle progress. Specifically, attempting to control the low-control stage of treatment resulted in increased distress. Additionally, intolerance of uncertainty proved to be a strong predictor of distress during the anticipatory stage.
