Thesis (Ph.D.)--Brigham Young University, 2007.
Many Americans now suffer from preventable diseases due to improper diet and a lack of exercise. The Protection Motivation Theory was used to examine if individuals of different weight classes varied in their appraisal of health threats, their ability to cope with those threats, and their intentions to eat healthier and exercise more. A total of 513 participants (375 underweight/normal weight and 138 overweight/obese individuals) were given essays that varied in threat and coping level. While groups varied by threat condition, coping condition, and Body Mass Index group, no significant interaction effects were found relating to intentions to change behavior. Differences between these groups as well as suggestions for future research are discussed.
