Thesis (Ph.D.)--Walden University, 2007.
Colon cancer is a serious public health problem. Scientific literature recognizes the role of physical activity in reducing colon cancer risk. But the possible biological mechanism to explain this relationship remains obscure. The purpose of this research was to enhance understanding of how physical activity helps to lower the risk of colon cancer. The research questions focused on identifying the colon cancer etiologic categories, the relationship between physical activity and these categories, and the biological mechanism that may explain this relationship. Using the content analysis methodology, the researcher reviewed 32,822 articles on the etiology and management of colon cancer published in the PubMed database of the National Library of Medicine from 1957 to 2005. To address the research questions, the archived material was classified and analyzed according to the following variables: physical activity and a number of colon cancer etiologic categories, including aging/genetics, diet/obesity, inflammation/immunity, and bioactive substances IGF-1/interleukins and prostaglandins. The analysis zeroed in on research that identified a common denominator, a substance that decreased in all colon cancer etiologic categories but increased with physical activity. That substance was found to be melatonin. Future research should attempt at quantifying health implications of each colon cancer etiologic category and physical activity. Nationally promoted programs of physical activity are recommended to substantially reduce the incidence of colon cancer and its personal, social, and economic costs.Subjects--Topical Terms:
