Nosocomial infections are the fourth-leading cause of death in the US. Most of these infections are the result of contamination during person-to-person contact. Healthcare workers can act as carriers of transient, pathogenic organisms. The majority of carriers have been found to be nurses, with the most common site of contamination being their hands. While research has focused on contamination of nurses' hands and the effectiveness of hand washing, the wrists have been overlooked. This study examined the effects of current hand washing practices on removing pathogens from nurses' wrists. It also compared pathogens on nurses' wrists with and without watches.

Cultures from 81 healthcare workers were obtained before and after hand washing, noting the presence of a watch and the watchband material. Data were collected using the swab technique and cultured using selective, differential agar media. The findings provide evidence that transient pathogenic organisms are found on the wrists' of healthcare workers and that current hand washing recommendations are not effective.
