Rousseau, Peter.
Turnover, retention, and Generation X: The workplace relationship.
- 55 p.
Adviser: Roger Keeran.
Thesis (M.A.)--State University of New York Empire State College, 2007.
This series of related papers addresses turnover from the perspective of the Generation X'er. The papers look at the available research for turnover as well as the available demographic data on Generation X, then reaches a conclusion with specific recommendations for employers in their efforts to retain Generation X employees in the workplace. Following a logical sequence, the first paper addresses the causes of turnover in general and explores a model of voluntary employee turnover and provides analysis of the limitation of existing research. As a result, the first paper addresses, "What are the reasons for voluntary turnover?" The second paper identifies Generation X as a specific demographic group and provides recommendations for further research into the factors that affect this group, and as a result answers the question, "What is Generation X?" The third addresses generalizations leveled against Generation X by older workers and managers, answering "What are the commonly held beliefs about Generation X by other generations?" The fourth paper incorporates the first three into a recommendation for retaining Generation X'ers based upon research and opinions from recognized experts in the field of Generational Study. This paper answers the key climatic question of this series of papers which is, "How can Generation X be retained in the workplace?"
