Thesis (Ed.D.)--Fielding Graduate University, 2007.
In this dissertation, I study the social phenomenon of individuals' persistent participation in organizational activities in spite of disappointments, setbacks, challenges, and/or unfavorable environments. The grounded theory research methodology was used to examine various behaviors that individuals display in this particular social process. As a result of the study, the theory of crusading was discovered. The theory of crusading explains why and how individuals engage in crusading, what stages individuals progress through in the process of crusading , what strategies and tactics individuals use to sustain themselves while crusading; what conditions affect individuals' crusading efforts; and what outcomes individuals encounter as a result of the process.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Through unwavering efforts of bettering, dutying , camaradering, and achieving and through the stages of readying, journeying, and reaping, individuals engage in a basic social process of crusading. The journey of crusading is inspired and guided by individuals' hopes to achieve what they believe to be important and possible. The practice of balancing allows individuals to stay on course by reassessing, readjusting, and re-engaging. The strategies of overlooking, disengaging, bypassing, and confronting enable individuals to progress while preserving their own interests at each stage of the journey of crusading. The assessment and understanding of different conditions in which individuals engage in crusading provide them with necessary and essential information that helps them adjust and persist in the journey of crusading. Their actions allow them to celebrate the positive outcomes of their crusading. The theory of crusading has implications both for individuals as well as organizations in a variety of environments.
