From polders to postmodernism: An intellectual history of archival theory.
Ridener, John.
From polders to postmodernism: An intellectual history of archival theory.
- 200 p.
Adviser: Connie Constantino.
Thesis (M.L.I.S.)--San Jose State University, 2007.
This thesis is an intellectual history of archival theory with an emphasis on the role of the dual concepts of objectivity and subjectivity in the theory of appraisal. The thesis discusses the development of archival theory through the framework of Thomas Kuhn's notion of paradigm change. The thesis posits that archival theory is influenced by geographical, historical, historiographical, and technological factors. The paper uses changes in the writing of history and historiography as a framework to plot the development of archival theory. Through a critical reading of archival theory from 1898 to 2007, periodization emerges. The periods include: Consolidation (Muller, Feith, and Fruin's Manual for the Arrangement and Description of Archives), Reinforcement (Jenkinson's A Manual of Archive Administration), Modern (Schellenberg's Modern Archives), and Questioning (the work of five archivists: Brothman, Cook, Heald, Ketelaar, and MacNeil from 1991 to 2004).
