Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Hawai'i at Manoa, 2007.
This dissertation examines the interaction between the Spanish Philippines and Cambodia from the late sixteenth century until the mid-seventeenth century. Using Spanish, and to a lesser extent Cambodian, sources, the dissertation not only shows the political, religious and strategic calculations that determined Manila's approach to Cambodia and the subsequent expeditions from the Spanish colony to the kingdom in 1596, 1599, 1603 and 1628, but also the response that met these expeditions in Cambodia.

Spanish interest in Cambodia was initially based on the dual prospect of evangelisation and conquest. This interest successive Cambodian kings managed to exploit, promising mass conversions in return for military assistance. These manoeuvrings allowed the Cambodian kings to maintain their independence well into the early seventeenth century. As the seventeenth century progressed however, the Spanish governors and friars realized that proselytisation in the kingdom was a fruitless task. The relation between the two countries decreased in importance for both parties and by the mid-seventeenth century was reduced to little more than sporadic trade.
