Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Washington, 1988.
This study provides an analysis of English gerunds in the Government-Binding theory (Chomsky 1981) and justifies five principal claims: (i) the gerundive construction is endocentric; (ii) minimality defines the domain of government; (iii) the DP hypothesis (Fukui and Speas 1986) is correct; (iv) the distribution of determiners and genitive DPs is governed by what I call the "Definiteness Principle;" and (v) only traces in A-positions are subject to the ECP. As we will see, these five claims are interrelated.Subjects--Topical Terms:

As for (i), I assign a sentential structure to all verbal gerunds, and appeal to the feature ($\pm
$n
) of INFL -ing in distinguishing POSS-ING, ACC-ING, and PRO-ING gerunds. As for (ii), I argue that the objective Case of the subject in ACC-ING is an example of exceptional Case marking, which itself demands that its INFL feature ($-
$n
) is not a Case assigner. Given (iii), it is possible to explain the hybrid nature of gerunds, i.e. that they seem partly nominal and partly sentential, without violating X-bar theory. Their Case requirement can be explained in terms of a Case Filter for Determiner Phrases. The Definiteness Principle of (iv) appeals to the feature (+Definite) and allows for a more general treatment of Ross' Left-Branch Condition and extraction from DPs. And the assumption of (v) explains some puzzling facts about the Superiority and that-trace effects.
