Thesis (M.A.)--University of Nebraska at Omaha, 2007.
A large body of research has evolved showing relationships between self-awareness processes and many other constructs such as creativity, need for cognition, self-esteem, and self-regulation, to name just a few. Taken as a whole, empirical research on self-awareness has shown these processes play an important role in daily functioning. In particular, self-awareness processes are theorized to be important within the context of leader development, especially self-regulatory functions involved in self-development. Existing self-awareness scales have limitations in the context of a leadership development model because of their limited view of personality and because they do not place emphasis on accuracy of self-awareness. In the present study, issues related to self-awareness measurement and assessments were discussed and a new scale for self-awareness was developed. The new scale provided support for a four-factor model self-awareness. On balance, the new measure correlated in the expected direction with four existing measures of self-awareness, as well as with constructs related to self-awareness, although magnitudes of correlation often were lower than expected. The new measure of self-awareness has support as a viable starting point for future work. Additional implications and future directions are discussed.
