Thesis (Ed.D.)--University of Delaware, 2008.
The purpose of this study was to review the core nursing curriculum at Salisbury University, and to compare it to the test plan for the licensure exam for registered nurses (NCLEX-RN). It involved collecting data from three sources. First, NCLEX-RN test results were reviewed for three graduating cohorts of nursing students (2004, 2005, and 2006). Second, selected course documents including syllabi, objectives, and comprehensive final exams were reviewed. Third, Nursing faculty were surveyed about how they chose their content for their courses and for the questions on the final exams. The curriculum data was analyzed in relation to the NCLEX-RN test plan to determine the extent of content alignment. Gaps in content coverage that corresponded to areas of graduates' weak performance were highlighted, and recommendations were made for increasing curriculum coverage in those areas. It was also recommended that faculty members review the NCLEX-RN Reports highlights on a yearly basis, and use the data to guide curriculum development efforts. This will ultimately result in improved curriculum alignment with the NCLEX-RN, and improved graduates' performance on the NCLEX-RN.
