This descriptive quantitative study examined the hypothesized role strain experienced by 184 first-, second-, and third-year diploma male nursing students. Research questions were formulated to ascertain whether there were correlations between role strain and sex-role and sex-role categorization level of male and female sex role characterization, age, year of nursing program currently enrolled and amount of previous education. Data were collected using three-part questionnaire comprised of Part 1, demographics; Part 2, Sex Role Inventory as developed by Bem; and Part 3, Total Role Strain Scale developed by Egeland and Brown. The mean and standard deviation for role strain (2.4 $\pm$.5) was below what the literature reports as a high level (3.0). Significant associations were found to exist between year of program, sex role category, level of female sex-role characterization, and role strain (n = 184 and p $<$.05).Subjects--Topical Terms:
