The experience of male nursing students during their obstetrical clinical has been seldom addressed by nurse researchers. This qualitative study was designed to identify the perceptions held by male nursing students about their clinical experience in obstetrics. The study was guided by van Manen's (1990) method of phenomenology. The method of data collection was two in-depth, face-to-face interviews. Participants were recruited through purposive sampling. All of the participants were given an opening statement about the study and were then asked to describe their perception of their clinical experience during audio-taped interviews. Through phenomenological analysis of the transcripts, the researcher developed descriptions of the clinical experience from the perspective of male nursing students. After descriptions based on the themes explicated by the students were written, participants were asked to validate the descriptions.

520 $a Eight themes emerged from the students' descriptions of their experience: what's it all about Alfie?, show me the way, let's call the whole thing off, I'm a stranger here, she's a woman, I did it my way, the times they are a-changin', and Beethoven's 9th, Symphony "ode to joy". The researcher found that while male students perceived that they were treated differently from their female counterparts by reason of their male gender, not all of the perceived differential treatment was construed as negative. Most of the seventeen participants in the study felt that overall, their obstetrical clinical experience had been a positive one. The results of this study may heighten nurse educators' sensitivity to male nursing students' needs during their obstetrical clinical experience.
