The purpose of the present study was to create, implement and evaluate a Residents as Teachers and Leaders (RATL) program for first year medical residents. Once the goals and objectives were established, and the participants identified, a subskills analysis was performed to determine the entry level behaviors required to take these modules successfully. Afterwards, a RATL Website was developed in which the instructional materials (4 different modules) were posted together with other information pertinent to the participants.

Several assessment instruments rendering qualitative data were used to make inferences about the need for changes in the self-learning, computer-based program, as a form of formative evaluation. Overall the results of the formative evaluation of the RATL curriculum showed that we succeeded in the goals we set for the program. Participants highly appreciated the format and content indicating that the modules created fulfilled their educational needs.
