Thesis (Ed.D.)--University of Massachusetts Lowell, 2008.
This study explored exposure of Registered Nurses in four geographically distinct states to the Shared Decision Making (SDM) model of patient care using a single stage, manually completed, mailed survey which investigated their pertinent beliefs and teaching strategies. Results indicated that the majority of participants, regardless of exposure or non-exposure to SDM, strongly agreed with its philosophy that active patient participation in establishing a personalized plan of care for self-management of chronic disease promotes sustained adherence to treatment. Significant findings for the four constructs measured: intentionality, forethought, self-reactiveness, and self-reflection (Bandura, 2001), revealed that those who had received instruction about SDM were more likely to implement its associated patient teaching strategies; however, only 13% of the respondents learned about it in their basic nursing programs. These results suggest a need for integration of the principles of the model into more undergraduate nursing curricula.
