The purpose of this study was to describe the prevalence and characteristics of employee wellness programs in public community colleges accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) in relation to institutional size and geographical region. A random sample of 250 public community colleges accredited by SACS were mailed a 46-item employee wellness program survey. The survey solicited program information regarding funding, activities offered, program administration, participation rates, employee cost, eligibility, facilities, incentives, accountability, and administrative support.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The results indicated that the majority of the employee wellness program administrative body was either the health and physical education department or a wellness committee and was housed in the health and physical education building. The main coordinators of the wellness programs were either part-time directors within the institution, wellness committees, or full-time directors within the institution. Walking was indicated as the most offered activity in the wellness programs. Of the institutions surveyed, 27 out of 64 (42.2%), offered an employee wellness program. A chi-square test of independence determined that no significant relationship existed between institutional size and the existence of an employee wellness program and no significant relationship existed between institutional location and the existence of an employee wellness program. The Cramer's V value calculated between institutional size and wellness program existence indicated a moderate association between the two variables. A Pearson r correlation between institutional size and wellness budget amounts indicated no significant positive relationship.

This research study indicated that neither the size nor the geographical location of a public community college is a determinant of the existence of an employee wellness program within the institution. Also, institutional size is not a predictor of the employee wellness budget amount. These findings indicated that the prevalence of employee wellness programs in public community colleges accredited by SACS are below previous research findings in community colleges and universities and do not meet the national health goals of employee health promotion prevalence set forth by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services document, Healthy People 2010.
