The resource-based view (RBV) of the firm, which has been popularized as an integrative and comprehensive theory of strategy explaining the sources of persistent profitability differences among firms have been the subject of growing empirical investigation in recent years. However, prior empirical studies have failed to address the issues of abnormal or firm-specific profits, the sustainability of profits and how industry competition may moderate the relationship between firm-specific resources and the sustainability of abnormal or firm-specific profits.

This dissertation uses data on large American companies to model firm-specific profitability. A dynamic heterogeneous panel data model is then developed to (1) examine the impact of firm-specific resources in the form of the quality of corporate management and organizational competence in sustaining the intertemporal variation in firm-specific profitability, and (2) explore the extent to which industry competition moderates the influence of firm-specific resources on firm-specific profitability.

The results indicate that firm-specific resources in the form of the quality of corporate management, technological competence, and employees' value added or skill levels significantly enhance firm-specific profits over time. Our exploratory analysis of the moderating role of industry competition gave us mixed and inconclusive results. The results of this dissertation provide considerable support for the tenets of the RBV of the firm by showing that firm-specific resources are very important in enhancing and sustaining firm-specific profitability.
