520 $a The subjects for this study participated in a longitudinal investigation of vulnerability and resiliency in children raised in low-income families. Data were collected in the lab at 12, 18, and 24 months and in the home at 15 or 18 months. Two cohorts of subjects were included; visual-motor performance was assessed when the toddlers in the first cohort were 15-months-old (n = 103), and when the toddlers in the second cohort were 15-months old (n = 111). Information was obtained regarding the level of activity, sociability/inhibition, and task orientation of the toddlers at 15 or 18 months and at 24 months of age. The quality of mothers' interactions with their toddlers was assessed at ages 12 and 18 months; maternal intelligence was evaluated when the toddlers were 24 months. The overall quality of the home environment was assessed at 15 or 18 months. Infant prematurity was estimated from maternal reports.
520 $a Analysis revealed that task orientation and the quality of maternal interactions had modest positive associations with visual-motor performance; activity level and prematurity had modest negative associations with visual-motor performance. Measures of the quality of the home environment had no association with visual-motor performance. Whereas maternal intelligence and toddler sociability/inhibition also had no association with visual-motor performance, analysis of variance revealed interactions with age/cohort for both these variables. Regression analysis indicated task orientation, activity level, the quality of maternal interactions, and prematurity accounted for close to 20% of the variability in visual-motor performance.
520 $a In summary, visual-motor performance in toddlers can be partially accounted for by psychological, biological, and social environmental factors. This finding suggests that in order to understand variability in visual-motor performance, dimensions of experience and behavior should be considered that have previously been overlooked.
