Available literature on women's experiences of their care focuses largely on midwives. There is a paucity of information about women's experiences with their caregivers in hospital birth, and even less which directly evaluates similarities and differences in women's birth experiences in and out of hospitals. Pregnancy is a time of developmental crisis for a woman and birth has the potential to be a transformative experience. Additionally, research shows that psychological well-being is related to pregnancy and birth outcome. This study evaluated women's decision-making about their care, expectations of caregivers and feelings about caregiver behavior, relationships with caregivers, and satisfaction with birth and care received. Nineteen women were interviewed for this study.

The data indicate that women in the midwifery group had more satisfying experiences than women in the obstetrical group. Decision-making in the midwifery group was more complex, and more women in that group had relationships with their caregivers. Relationship with the caregiver was related to satisfaction with birth and care received in both groups. Implications for further research, training, and clinical practice are suggested.
