In 1996, new federal welfare laws were enacted that significantly reduced the amount of time recipients may receive welfare benefits. Therefore, not only will welfare cease to be an option for many women, but many will be forced to find jobs relatively quickly. Thus, a woman on welfare's ability to search for a job becomes critical. The extent to which a woman on welfare is successful in finding a job may be influenced by her level of job-seeking self-efficacy, the belief that one has the necessary capabilities to engage in a job search (Rife & Kilty, 1990; van Ryn & Vinokur, 1992; Wanberg, Watt, & Rumsey, 1996; Wenzel, 1993). Because job-seeking self-efficacy is significantly related to subsequent employment status (Blau, 1994; Caplan, Vinokur, Price, & Van Ryn, 1989; Eden & Aviram, 1993; Kanfer & Hulin, 1985; Rife & Kilty, 1990), and because training programs can increase job-seeking self-efficacy (Houser, D'Andrea, & Daniels, 1992), it is crucial to investigate predictors of job-seeking self-efficacy in a welfare population. This study examined Bandura's model of the antecedents of self-efficacy, including past experience, vicarious experience, verbal persuasion, and emotional arousal, among 196 women on welfare. In addition, this study expanded Bandura's model to include two important components missing in Bandura's model: namely, domestic violence and tangible support. This study also examined how concrete obstacles to job searching, such as housing instability or physical disability, might moderate the relationship between job-seeking self-efficacy and job-seeking behaviors.
