The purpose of the present study is to test the major postulates of the self-enhancement and the self-verification theories in relation to social connectedness (SC). The present study explored how women responded to either favorable or unfavorable observer's feedback about their social competence. It was also assumed that the degree of certainty on SC would moderate women's appraisals of the observer's feedback. Women with high SC were expected to employ self-enhancement strategies regardless of type of feedback received because they tended to have high degree of certainty on their high SC. Women with low SC, on the contrary, were expected to employ self-verification strategies after receiving feedback as long as they had a high degree of certainty on SC, while their counterparts with low degree of certainty would employ self-enhancement strategies.

520 $a In this study, one hundred women between the ages of 18 and 30 participated in a 15-minute structured interview about their career development. After the individual interview sessions, all women were asked to evaluate their interviewer. When they had completed the questionnaire about the interviewer, they were asked again to read and evaluate the observer's report for its accuracy, perceptiveness, credibility, and satisfaction and their own state self-esteem. The analyses revealed a significant main effect for feedback on the evaluation of the observer's feedback and state self-esteem for both groups. A significant interaction effect of the certainty on SC with state self-esteem was found only for women who were more certain of their low SC. The present study expands our understanding of women with low social connectedness and may have significant implications for counseling practice for them.
