This study identifies, and describes the interactive patterns of a small group of inner city African American caregiver infant dyads, and the meanings behind the interactive patterns from the perspective of the community being studied. Fourteen (14) dyads with infants from seven (7) to fifteen (15) months were the subjects of this study. Caregivers were similar in ethnicity, education and economic status.

This was an exploratory study that employing ethnographic approaches and methodology. The data was collected in the homes of participating families and included fieldnotes, open-ended interviews of caregivers and a group of six community members, videotaped recordings of caregiver-infant interactions around feedings and diaper changes, and responses of caregivers and community members to the viewing of the videotaped episodes. The interactive patterns that served as the units of analysis emerged from the responses of the two groups viewing the videotapes.

Two major categories of interactive patterns emerged in this study: (1) instructional interactions, and (2) play interactions. Many of the patterns were in keeping with either the interactive or cross-cultural literature. Despite the homogeneity of the dyads both similarities and differences were found in the interactive patterns and caregiving practices. Vocalizations and gestures on the part of the infants received the most responses from caregivers, and talking, positioning and watching were the behaviors most used by caregivers. Differences in caregiver behaviors were found in use of language and responsiveness to infant cues.

The majority of caregivers performed all the caregiving routines on their laps. This practice affected how and when interactions took place. Caregivers valued independence and assertiveness. Early walking and language served the purposes of early independence and protection. Early independence was also related to the belief that children need to learn how to defend themselves. Interactive patterns and caregiving practices related to these goals and beliefs were found.

The findings of this study demonstrate the important and complex influences of the socio-cultural context on the beliefs and practices guiding caregiver-infant interactions. It contributes to our understanding of interactive processes within this particular community, and provides an approach to understanding the patterns and practices of particular socio-cultural communities.
