To investigate the judgements of children's truthful and untruthful verbal reports, 79 elementary school students 9 to 10 years of age were randomly assigned to play one of two children's games with an adult. Students were instructed either to tell the truth or to not tell the truth. Judges were instructed to determine if the student had given them a truthful response. Each student was individually interviewed by an interview judge and asked several questions while being videotaped. Videotapes of the interviews were shown to four separate judges, who rendered evaluations of truthfulness and the confidence levels experienced in raters' own judgments.

Results supported the hypothesis that judges were able to assess verbal reports of children's truthfulness, but not untruthfulness, at levels significantly greater than chance. Judges' accuracy levels were unrelated to confidence levels. Overall, interview judges were significantly more confident in their ratings than the video judges.

The relationship of accuracy of judges' ratings of truthfulness and untruthfulness and judges' use of specific behavioral cues manifested by the children evaluated was not significant. Judges were not any more accurate when using cues than when not using cues. Behavioral cues reported under the different experimental conditions were identified and discussed and compared with observations from research with children.

Results of the present investigation raise questions about the reliability of using videotapes as a means of evaluating children's reports of truthfulness and untruthfulness. Results also suggest that further research is needed to explore the different types of lies that children tell. In addition, lies that involve touch may be different than those not involving touch. Although results showed judges had greater accuracy in the touch game condition, further studies are needed to determine if lies about touch are easier to detect.

Findings suggest that extreme caution be used when evaluating children's reports using videotaped recordings. If future studies confirm the findings in the present research, education is recommended for professionals in the assessment of children's reports of truthfulness and untruthfulness, and also closer examination of particular cues used to assess children's lies.
