This dissertation examines the tactics used by a group of Iranian women to improve their status under an Islamic regime. Women's use of Islamic feminism and the human rights discourse as tools of resistance is the focus of this study. The data for this project were gathered through interviews with activists, participant observation in the Society for Protecting the Rights of the Child (SPRC), a case-study of a trial aimed at reforming custody laws, and numerous books and articles written by contemporary Iranian reformists. The findings suggest that Iranian women must put forth their demands for reform strategically. They simultaneously use feminist interpretations of Islam and ideologies from the human rights discourse while avoiding the “feminist” label and threatening valued religious norms. Their arguments challenging discriminatory laws are presented in an Islamic framework. In essence, these reformists legitimize their opposition to certain religious precepts by indicating their devotion to Islam. In this way, their efforts indicate a form of resistance from within a repressive regime, through reinterpretation of the very tools used to oppress them.
