Thesis (Ph.D.)--State University of New York at Binghamton, 2001.
This dissertation opens with a discussion of the testimonio and its call to solidarity within the context of Colombia, specifically through the translations of Consuelo Avila's Bajo mis pies no florecen amapolas (1988) and Maria Eugenia Vásquez's Escrito para no morir: bitácora de una militancia (2000). While issues of witnessing on various levels (witness-as-eye-witness, and witness-as-listener/reader, among others) are discussed through many forms of testimonio, the main focus is on the role of the translator as witness. The translator plays a hybrid role from multiple angles as receiver and producer, speaker and listener, witness and jury, writer and reader. Through a discussion of the de Campos brothers' theory of cannibalism specifically applied to translation, and of translation strategies which blur the boundaries separating “source” and “target” texts, the position of the translator as enabler of a story, witness to an event, and bearer of news is brought to the fore.
