This study represents an exploratory investigation between the effects of rough and tumble play (RTP) and the physical competence of a male toddler. This attempt to dispel some of the negative attitudes toward children exhibiting RTP may provide a change in the attitudes and practices of parents and caregivers in childcare situations.

The five research hypotheses explored stated (a) a positive relationship exists between the score on a test of physical motor competence (PHYCOMP) of the male toddler and the observed frequency of RTP between the toddler and each of the parents, (b) a positive relationship exists between the observed frequency of RTP between the toddler and each of the parents and each parental report of the frequency of RTP occurring between the toddler and parents, (c) a positive relationship exists between the score on a test of PHYCOMP of the male toddler and each parental report of the frequency of RTP occurring between the toddler and parents, (d) a positive relationship exists between the observed frequency of RTP between the toddler and each of the parents and a caregiver report of the frequency of RTP, and (e) a positive relationship exists between the score on a test of PHYCOMP of the male toddler and the score on a caregiver report of the frequency of RTP.

The subjects were 7- to 20-month-old white males who were living in an intact family with a mother and father. Twelve-min videotaped play sessions occurred with the mother and toddler and with the father and toddler in a designated play area. Articles of play were a Bobby (BoBo) punching doll, a large-sized ball, a small-sized ball, a regular bed pillow, and a small neck-roll pillow.

The findings seemed to indicate that when fathers thought they exhibited more RTP than mothers, male toddlers had a higher PHYCOMP score. The same seemed to be true when the caregiver thought they exhibited more RTP interaction. The results suggest that a positive attitude of parents and caregivers toward RTP may be desirable. Further research needs to be conducted on RTP and PHYCOMP.
