Children of drug-related births in the U.S. are presently entering into our schools in increasing numbers. This study examines teachers' attitudes toward children of crack/cocaine-exposed births and teachers' expectations of these students' social and neurobehavioral responses. The Attitudes Toward Drug-Related Births Inventory (ATDB) and the Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale, were completed by general education (n = 96) and special education teachers (n = 45) from Boston and surrounding area schools. Data analysis compared the two groups to investigate the extent to which educational level; drug education training; and specialty (i.e., special education or regular education), made a difference in how favorable teachers' attitudes were toward crack/cocaine-exposed children. Results indicated that the special-education teachers held a significantly more favorable attitude toward the drug-exposed children than did the regular classroom teachers. Additional analysis examined educational levels which resulted in a significant interaction between the teachers' specialty and level of education. The special-education teachers with undergraduate degrees held the most favorable attitude, while non-special education undergraduates had scores that indicated the least favorable attitude. Neither years of experience nor drug-education training indicated significant difference. In general both the special education and the non-special education teachers held neutral to positive attitudes. The overall findings suggest that teachers in different specialty areas hold different attitudes and there is a need for preservice/inservice preparation for both sample groups.
