The main objective of this study was to investigate the early predictive power and longitudinally obtained developmental trends of speech disfluencies with special reference to the distribution and length of stuttering-like disfluencies (part-word repetition, monosyllabic word repetition, and disrhythmic phonation) in the speech of preschool age children who recover from or persist in stuttering. Two indicators of disfluency distributions, (a) the absolute frequency per 100 spoken syllables, and (b) the proportion of each disfluency type in the total number of disfluencies, were investigated. Two indicators of length were also employed: (a) the number of times that a segment was repeated per instance of disfluency, and (b) the durations of disfluencies in milliseconds as were measured from the acoustic signals.

Results indicated that initially the recovered group produced a higher frequency of disfluencies, more units per instance of repetition, and a slower rate of repetition. The persistent group produced a larger proportion of disrhythmic phonations within the total number of stuttering-like disfluencies.

Over a two-year period, the persistent group remained relatively consistent frequency, type and duration of their disfluencies. The expected increase in severity was not observed for this group. The recovered group, over time, decreased the frequency of disfluencies, decreased the number of repeated units within repetitions, increased the duration of repetitions by increasing the duration of the silent interval between repeated units, and changed from producing predominantly part-word to monosyllabic word repetitions.
