Gender differences have been found in the manifestation of psychopathy in adult populations, and the understanding and detection of psychopathy in females is less defined than it is with males. The contemporary findings that relational aggression (which involves harm to individuals' relationships with others) is equally or more likely to be found among females than males, suggest that relational aggression might be, an important factor in female psychopathy. To improve upon the existing understanding and detection of psychopathy in female inmates, a means of conceptualizing how women act out aggressively is necessary. Assessment of relational aggression might improve the usefulness of the measure of psychopathy among female inmate populations in predicting negative outcomes—in this study, institutional misconduct.

The present study used a correlational design to examine the relationship between psychopathy, relational aggression, and institutional misconduct in female inmates. Participants included 64 females inmates (20 African-American, 27 Caucasian, 17 other) who had been incarcerated at least 2 months in minimum, medium, and maximum security units within a county jail. Psychopathy was measured by the Psychopathy Checklist Revised (PCL-R) (intraclass correlations between independent raters = .93,30, and .90 for total PCL-R scores, Factor I scores, and Factor 2 scores, respectively). Relational aggression, physical aggression, and prosocial behaviors were measured within each unit by a peer nomination instrument (coefficient alphas = .95, .95, and .92, respectively). Jail files were used to count rule violations to measure institutional misconduct within the jail (interrater agreement = 1.0).

Results provided evidence that relational aggression is a measurable construct within an adult, incarcerated, female population and that it is significantly related to institutional misconduct, r = .38, p < .05. Results also indicated a significant and positive correlation between relational aggression and psychopathy, but the significant relationship was due to high scores the African-American inmates obtained on these variables. Further ethnic differences were found in hierarchical regression analyses indicating that Factor 2 of the PCL-R predicted institutional misconduct, but only for African-American women. Overall, relational aggression did not, as predicted, capture significant incremental variance in predicting institutional misconduct over and above ethnicity and psychopathy measures.
