We have conducted extensive simulation studies in order to study the behavior of TCP and UDP traffic streams. We identify network layer, application layer, and architectural enhancements that improve throughput and lower jitter.

The performance of applications running in mobile wireless ad hoc networks suffers due to the absence of a fixed network infrastructure. Mobility, packet collisions, and the vagaries of the wireless medium serve to bring end-to-end throughput down and cause jitter.

In our simulation models, we study the use of forward error correction in a variety of different scenarios. We also introduce the notion of quasi ad hoc routers to help keep the network connected and we propose an algorithm for enhancing the Dynamic Source Routing protocol by making it power aware. We believe that this enhancement can reduce the time period between a route breakage and a new route discovery.
