Geographic Information Systems/Science (GIS) education is a current topic of debate. Where an individual stands on this debate depends on their view of GIS. Some believe that GIS education should concentrate primarily on GIS concepts while others believe that GIS education should focus on training students to use GIS technology. Consequently, an introductory GIS course at one academic institution may focus on software training whereas an introductory GIS course at another institution may focus on GIS concepts. Through surveys, this research examined the nature and extent of GIS course offerings at California community colleges from 2001–2002. Results indicate that GIS courses have increased in the last decade and are offered at varying levels. The instructional approach appeared to be more aligned with providing GIS training than Geographic Information Science education. GIS Students are perceived by educators to be working professionals seeking technical training.
