This thesis aims to show that the notion of ‘<italic>habitus</italic>’ or permanent disposition, although an important element in the Catholic moral virtue theory tradition, is largely absent in contemporary virtue-based theories. The notion of ‘<italic>habitus</italic>’ in the later writings of St Thomas Aquinas (1224–1274) is examined and its source in Aristotle's <italic> Nicomachean Ethics</italic> is outlined. The prevalent disregard of the notion of ‘<italic>habitus</italic>’ in contemporary virtue-based theories is shown by referring to the work of Charles Curran, Alasdair MacIntyre, Stanley Hauerwas, jean Porter, John Finnis, Germain Grisez, Otto Hermann Pesch, Thomas F. O'Meara OP, Jean-Pierre Torrell OP, Paul Wadell OP and Servais Pinckaers OP.

Chapter two examines the concept of ‘<italic>habitus</italic>’ in Aristotle's ethics, especially the Nicomachean Ethics, in which ‘<italic> habitus</italic>’ is presented as a hexis (<math> <f> <g>e</g><sup><hsp sp="-0.167"><hsp sp="-0.167">`<sup>′</sup> </sup><hsp sp="-0.167"><g>x</g><g>i</g><rm>s</rm></f> </math>) of character. The Nicomachean Ethics is identified as a direct source for St Thomas Aquinas' treatise on ‘<italic>habitus </italic>.’ The transmission of Aristotle's thought and works until the thirteenth century is briefly sketched.

Chapter three outlines St Thomas Aquinas' treatise on the notion of ‘<italic> habitus</italic>’ or permanent disposition in the <italic>Summa Theologiæ </italic>, and resolves certain textual interpretative ambiguities. St Thomas Aquinas' later writings, the <italic>Quodlibetal Questiones</italic> and Disputed Questions <italic>De virtutibus in communi</italic> are also reviewed.

The thesis concludes that there are few contemporary virtue-based theories that incorporate the notion of ‘<italic>habitus</italic>’ or permanent disposition as presented by St Thomas Aquinas in the <italic>Summa Theologiæ </italic>. The thesis finds that with the exception of certain Dominican Thomists, namely O'Meara, Torrell, Wadell and Pinckaers, the other selected contemporary virtue-based theories are not continuous with traditional Catholic virtue theory as exemplified in the later writings of St Thomas Aquinas. This conclusion suggests that there should be a recovery of the notion of ‘<italic> habitus</italic>’ or permanent disposition so that contemporary virtue theories may overcome the difficulties resulting from an apparent disregard for St Thomas Aquinas' notion of ‘<italic>habitus</italic>’ and thereby make a more significant contribution to the post-modern search for meaning and Truth.
