This dissertation explores possible effects of treatment for post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) that combines logotherapy with cognitive-behavioral therapy. This inquiry was conducted at a Department of Veterans Affairs Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Residential Treatment Program (PRRTP) facility in Hilo. Eleven male veterans of Vietnam participated in this heuristic inquiry. Each was referred by a mental health professional working for the Department of Veterans Affairs, had been given a diagnosis of PTSD, and had been in outpatient care for 3 months to 5 years. Specifically, this inquiry attempted to study connections between the experience of logotherapy (the search for meaning in traumatic events) and improvement in self-reports of clinical symptoms of PTSD. The participants of this study attended didactic lectures, logotherapy and cognitive-behavioral process groups, and completed follow-up interview questions. However, a methodological conflict between heuristic analysis of experience and the attempt also to derive a causal relationship from that analysis limited the substantive conclusions that could be drawn. Future researchers in this area are cautioned against a combined design approach.

The responses from the veterans 60 days after program completion indicated they were spending more time with their families, less time in isolation, and actively seeking a sense of meaning and purpose in their life. The veterans also acknowledged that they were responsible for making positive changes in their life. While unable to conclude that combining logotherapy with cognitive-behavioral therapy results in this reduction of PTSD symptomatology, a follow-up survey focused more systematically on matched samples of veterans could yield significant differences, as these attitudes were among the treatment goals of the combined programs.
