Nine swimmers from the Bayou Elite Swim Team were chosen to participate in a 12-week cross training program in order to determine if strength training would improve swimming performance. The subjects were asked to attend two training sessions each week that included indoor cycling and sport specific strength training. Pre and posttest measurements were taken on total body weight, height, body mass index, sum of skin fold thickness, body fat percentage, and swimming distance in a 12-minute time trial. In contrast to much of the research on strength training and swimming performance, this research found significant improvements in swimming performance after the 12-week training period. The paired t-test was significant (p = .019). Additionally, subjects 1 and 2 showed improvements in body fat percentage (12.62% & 24.23%, respectively).Subjects--Topical Terms:
