This research project involved the development of a 337-item self-report instrument, entitled the "Family Background Questionnaire" (FBQ), which was designed to measure family of origin characteristics in adults. Items were developed for the FBQ after reviewing the literature on family theory and research. Four family variables were identified as having important influences on children's psychosocial development: Parental responsiveness (including warmth, acceptance, involvement, and maltreatment), parental control (including behavioral control, decision making style, and the nature of the parental coalition), family communication (including clarity, openness, and honesty), and other risk factors (including parental substance abuse, parental psychological adjustment, parental and family conflict, family stressors, and lack of social support). The majority of the items written to assess each of these variables inquire about one's father and mother behavior separately, which resulted in a total of 415 items in the preliminary version of the instrument.Subjects--Topical Terms:

520 $a Various studies were conducted to address evidence for the reliability and validity of the FBQ. These studies included (1) developing a Response Inconsistency Scale to detect careless and random responding to the instrument; (2) a reliability analysis; (3) using a panel of family psychology experts to judge the appropriateness of the items for measuring family of origin characteristics (content-related validity evidence); (4) an examination of social desirability bias in FBQ responses (divergent construct-related validity evidence); and (5) an examination of differences between various clinical and non-clinical groups of test respondents (criterion-related validity evidence). The data used to conduct the above analyses were obtained from 73 clinical and 192 non-clinical subjects. Expert judging of the items and examinations of missing values, response variability, response inconsistency, and reactivity to social desirability bias resulted in the deletion of a small number of items from the instrument. Following these analyses, several additional items were deleted on the basis of an item analysis. The internal consistency of the resulting scales was found to be high (Cronbach alpha correlation coefficients for the various scales ranged from.85 to.99), and all of the validity studies resulted in evidence for the validity of the FBQ.
