Thesis (M.Ed.)--University of Hawaii, 1995.
The purpose of this thesis is to use the research questions as a guide and to apply the behavioral theory as a conceptual framework to explore and analyze the metacontingencies produced by Chinese urban families having, rearing and educating their only children after the initiation of China's Only-child Policy. In order to support and validate the Behaviorism theory of "selection by consequences" with the research data, an independent survey and personal interviews with Chinese only-child mothers were conducted. Reviews of both American and Chinese literature offer a better understanding of universal patterns and consequences of raising the only children. Knowledge of behavioral analysis of China's dramatic social transition, the Only-child Policy, young parents' responses to the socioeconomic changes also offers valuable guidance in planning socially, culturally and politically acceptable styles of Chinese only-child rearing and family education. Some public educational policies are recommended and suggested in order to prevent the negative consequences.Subjects--Topical Terms:
