Web site design is a new and underdeveloped discipline. This is one reason why the examination of a specific component of web design, such as web-based intranets, has yet to be examined by empirical research. Fortunately, the focus of this dissertation, studying web-based intranets for colleges and universities, can be very beneficial in assisting to build and expand the foundation of the web design/development field.

520 $a The results of this study suggest that it is important to consider one's intended audience when building web-based intranets for colleges and universities. The results from the participants and data in this research study, for example, suggest that a large number of students access a university's web-based intranet by using a 56 Kbps modem or slower. This type of knowledge is crucial when building, developing, and launching a web-based intranet for a university or college, because often the intended users or students are left out of the design and development equation.
520 $a In the case of this research study, it appears that a majority of students visit a university's web-based intranet to access information and not to inquire about/experience the latest multimedia. This finding, coupled with the additional web-based findings, can now be utilized by developers and researchers of web-based intranets to successfully target users before creating, building, and launching web sites. Additionally, future developers now have a stronger reason to spend more time using techniques and applications that target students who look to access information.
