<italic>Circling the Square: Transforming Group Process into Dynamic Harmony</italic> was born out of my sincere desire to contribute to an emerging societal paradigm shift away from hierarchical and competitive structures in businesses and decision-making groups. I embrace a movement toward more transformative and self-determining group processes. This qualitative research project was designed to develop and experiment with an innovative process, called <italic>E Gul</italic>, that aims to respect the rich diversity of authentic individual voices and also to foster collective wisdom. It furthers “dynamic harmony” an optimal state of group functioning where there are positive experiences of surprise, magic, harmony and fulfillment.

520 $a The research project was a single case study utilizing this group process, executed over the course of several months. Nine members of a board of directors for a non-profit organization participated in the study. Congruent with the exploratory and personal nature of the constructivist methodology employed, meanings arose out of an intimacy with the data and my direct experience with the project.
520 $a Inspired by my studies of indigenous cultures and their approaches to collective life, group sessions integrated a variety of innovative activities and processes that were unified by adopting a circle formation as the group “home”. This promoted a sense of inclusiveness, wholeness, and sanctity. Various elements of ritual and ceremony, imagination, intuition, and a sense of playfulness were also employed.
520 $a A strong dose of conflict resolution through mediation, and some training in interpersonal communication skills, helped relieve the tensions between group members that threatened the group's cohesiveness and overall effectiveness. The process was integral in nature and remained flexible throughout, adapting itself to the needs of the group, and yet staying aligned with the research design and intention.
520 $a Many powerful themes emerged, and vital insights were gained. Further development beckons, and the possible applications of this work are many. Most of all, the research demonstrated real potential for transforming group process in a way that both individuals and the collective flourish and grow. It is a small, but exciting step toward a more conscious and harmonious approach toward group life and collaboration in our society.
