Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Missouri - Columbia, 2002.
The purpose of this study was to investigate how twelve young adults think, talk about, and use popular song. From October 2000 to January 2001, a series of small group interviews were conducted. Consistent with a grounded theory approach to qualitative research, the interview questions were open-ended and exploratory. After carefully reading and coding transcripts for patterns and themes, the data suggests that these high school students respond to popular song in ways that parallel literary response models. Thus, what we want our students to do with literature (and all school-sponsored text)—how we want them to think and interact with the text—these twelve young adults demonstrate with popular song. Recommendations stemming from this study include a greater focus on the role of the aesthetic in thinking, as well as the use of popular song and other media in all classrooms as a way to bridge the gap between students and school-sponsored text.
