Thesis (Ph.D.)--Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, 2002.
The political and religious environment in which Thomas Cranmer ministered required patience and diplomacy. With these skills and help from men like Martin Bucer (1491–1551), Peter Martyr Vermigli (1499–1562), and John Laski (1499–1560), Cranmer led the Anglican Church toward a via media in order to establish a religious framework to reconcile contrary positions and establish unity within the church. The purpose of this dissertation is an analysis of the influence of Bucer, Vermigli, and Laski upon Cranmer and the via media of the English Reformation, with specific focus being placed on their input concerning the 1552 edition of the Book of Common Prayer.

Chapter One establishes the historical background of the early stages of the English Reformation and provides biographical information on key individuals. Chapter Two covers the influence of Bucer upon Cranmer and his struggles to find a middle way. The mitigating influence of Vermigli and Laski is analyzed in Chapter Three. Chapter Four discusses the initial pinnacle of Cranmer's reforming efforts, the Edwardian Church Finally, the Conclusion brings the discussion and analysis to a climax by focusing on the via media established under Elizabeth 1

The via media which was established as the core of the English Reformation would not have been possible without the influence of Bucer, Vermigli, and Laski. The middle ground found was a direct result of the mediating leadership of Thomas Cranmer and his conscious effort to find a theological foundation upon which a majority could agree. This mediating position and attitude is reminiscent of Martin Bucer's work on the Continent. The similarities in their leadership styles enhanced their friendship and working relationship

In the course of the English Reformation there was a movement from Catholicism, through Lutheranism, toward a Reformed viewpoint, but a Catholic presence was always retained which kept the pendulum from swinging totally to a Reformed position such as that found in Calvin's Geneva. In this milieu a via media was found through the guidance of Thomas Cranmer
