This dissertation deals with the development of a general approach to the formulation and solution of the equations of motion for a complex elastic mechanism system. The equations of motion are derived by utilizing a finite element approximation. The derivation and final form of the equations of motion provide the capability to model a general two- or three-dimensional complex elastic mechanism, to include the non-linear rigid-body and elastic motion coupling terms in a general representation, and to allow any finite element type to be utilized in the model.

A computer program is designed and written to implement the modeling and solution techniques. The program includes a variety of linear and quadratic element types, and is used to analyze typical elastic mechanisms, examples of which are included herein.

Results of an experimental investigation of an elastic four-bar linkage are also presented. By comparing the experimentally determined strains with those obtained analytically, it is found that the analytical strains, in both the amplitude and frequency content, agree very well with the experimentally obtained results. It is also observed that the inclusion of the geometric stiffness matrix in the analysis improved the correlation between the experimental and analytical results significantly
