Thesis (Ph.D.)--The Union Institute, 1993.
The dissertation is composed of a book of fiction and a contextual essay. The book experiments with late twentieth century postmodern devices in the art of fiction. The plot in the leading story that runs through the book is fragmented into seven (allusion to seven days of creation) other plots that support the main story line thematically rather than chronologically. The method of fragmentation is based on one of the chaos theories, Mandelbrot's fractals; the purpose of this apparent disorder is to heighten the readers' perception where linear boundaries are replaced by pluralities/fused horizons and therefore opennesses.Subjects--Topical Terms:

To provide the detail for the discussion of the narrative techniques used in the book, the second component is a contextual essay with four main parts: an introduction that scans through the most important theories on postmodern literature including a detailed discussion on Hayles' interpretation of chaos theory (chaos and its quality to self-organize; chaos and the theory of strange attractors; and chaos and fractals); three sections of text analysis that apply chaos theory to three postmodern narrative patterns in Monsieur Songe, Around the Day in Eighty Worlds, and Abishag; and a conclusion summarizing the points with an emphasis on some of the advantages postmodernism seen as a representation of pluralities might have in the field of narratology, sociology and politics. The essay argues that despite various labels accompanying the trend of postmodernism in literature, such as the literature of silence, exhaustion, fragmentation, weak thought and above all chaos, the postmodern narrative, because it embodies all these symptoms, indicates the 'maximal' plurality characteristics of highly organized structures yet to come.
