Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of South Carolina, 2002.
This dissertation links longitudinal data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics with information on respondents' census tracts to examine the role of neighborhood characteristics in the likelihood of a transition to home ownership. Consistent with the Geography of Opportunity and Housing Supply Perspective, event-history analysis of data show that residing in a neighborhood with greater percentages of both owned and multi-unit housing provides strong incentives to ownership, for both black and white households. Little support was found for the effect of limited social interactions due to the relative size of tenure and racial groups as posited by the Social Structure Perspective. Racial differences are found at the level of individual family characteristics such as education, gender and age.
